Mobile Computing

Mobile computing has become an important technology discipline in its' own right. What was formerly the preserve of the sales rep has now become a mainstream part of IT provision across all levels in business, with increased used of mobile email, remote access and homeworking enabled by broadband and WiFi, the distribution of the "IT Estate" has extended outside the workplace and now reaches anywhere that can provide a good mobile telephone signal or internet connection.

With mobile computing comes a fresh set of challenges for the IT team - support of remote users and devices is much more difficult than it is for those on the LAN, and devices connected to public communications infrastructure are more vulnerable to security threats. The extension of mobile computing to staff with less IT-centric roles, such as field workers and senior executives increases the challenge further, for these people the use of IT is often peripheral to their main activities, and their tolerance and acceptance of IT and its' constraints is proportionately less.
